The currency of Cyprus is the Cyprus Pound, with one Pound equalling 100 cents. Notes come in denominations of C£20, 10, 5 and 1. Coins are in denominations of 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents. The currency in Northern Cyprus is the Turkish New Lira – see Turkey section for info on this currency.Money can be exchanged at many bureaus and an increasing number of ATMs. Traveller’s cheques are widely accepted. To avoid additional conversion charges these should be in Pounds Sterling or Cyprus Pounds.ATMs are widespread through Cyprus and the majority of major international credit and debit cards are accepted. Export of domestic and foreign currency is limited to the amount declared on entry. General banking hours in most areas are from 0830 to 1230 Mondays to Fridays in June, July and August. Hours are from 0815 to 1230 Mondays to Fridays and 1515 1645 Mondays during the rest of the year. Banks in tourist areas may open afternoons and longer hours. Normal shopping hours are usually from 0800 to 1300 and 1600 to 1930 in the summer, with 0800 to 1300 and 1430 to 1800 in winter. Shops are closed Wednesdays and Saturdays after 1400, as well as all day Sunday. Some shops in tourist areas open longer hours. Formal suits are expected of business meetings along with an old-fashioned sense of politeness – punctuality is expected and a handshake is a normal greeting. Turning down an offer of Greek coffee or a cold drink is frowned upon, it should be noted. Tipping is down to individual discretion
